Managing The Home Room Input Feature
The home room input feature in the Meal Input Program at the Point of Sale may be a very useful feature at certain schools. You can see representations of this feature in the tutorial under the "For Cashiers" tab and then the Log On To The POS tab. At the end of the referenced tutorial you will see the on screen lists of home rooms and students within those home rooms from which meals may be served.
This feature is used to serve lunch when students come to the cafeteria by class so that the cashier may enter the teachers name and then students in that class are displayed. If the pictures of the students have been introduced to the master file, then the images of the students along with their name will be displayed. The cashier touches the name of the student and then the Meal Input screen is displayed permitting the meal and or AlaCarte items to be recorded. This may prove to be an efficient way to record transactions of students in the primary grades.
Schools also find this helpful and a quick way to record meals , particularly breakfast, that are served in the classroom. The bar code rosters ( see how to print these rosters ) that are produced by the system are retrieved from the classrooms each morning and then used to input the meals consumed by using the home room input feature. The Express Input option may be used with the home room option which causes the meal to be recorded as the students name is touched with out additional action by the cashier.
There are certain items that must be managed by the system administrators for the home room input feature to be operational. The two essential items are that the correct home room of each student must be recorded in field 35 of the Student Master File and the correct teacher recorded as associated with that home room. In most cases home rooms are imported from the demographic updates from the school district. Teachers associated with home rooms must be entered by the system administrator. We suggest that students and associated home rooms be verified prior to first use of the home room input feature. This may be accomplished by printing out the home room bar code list for each home room and having these lists verified by the teachers. Corrections may then be made. Changes to students home rooms may be made in the individual master file (see this tutorial) or in the Quick Inputs program which will be one of the tutorials in this section. Home rooms associated with teachers may be maintained in the Teacher Home Room maintenance program which is also in this tutorial.
